Sons of the Forest Dedicated Server Plans
For Sons of the Forest, prioritize CPU clock speed, sufficient memory, SSD or NVMe storage, and a server location close to your players. The configurations below are filtered for these workload requirements.
| Server (CPU | RAM | Storage) | Cores / Threads | RAM | Storage | Port Speed | Location | Availability |
|---|

Test Server Latency Before Ordering
Server location can affect latency as much as hardware selection. Before ordering, use the 1Gbits Looking Glass to test ping, routing, packet loss, and network paths from available locations.
Test the locations closest to most of your players, then compare the available server configurations in that region.

FAQs
The standard Sons of the Forest dedicated server supports up to 8 players. Choose your hardware based on the server workload, world size, and any additional processes rather than expecting additional hardware to increase the game's normal player limit.
For the configurations shown on this page, start with at least 4 modern physical CPU cores, 16 GB RAM, and SSD or NVMe storage. Higher CPU clock speeds and 32 GB or more RAM can provide additional headroom for persistent worlds and other server-side processes.
Both SSD and NVMe storage are suitable. NVMe provides higher storage performance and is the preferred option when available. HDD-only configurations are not included in the recommended server list for this page.
Choose a location close to the majority of your players, but test the route before ordering rather than relying only on geographic distance. You can use the 1Gbits Looking Glass to measure ping and routing, or review the available dedicated server locations before selecting a server.
The official Sons of the Forest Dedicated Server tool is distributed for Windows. If you need to compare available Windows-based hardware first, review the Windows dedicated server configurations.
Yes. Full administrator access lets you manage the operating system, server files, firewall rules, game configuration, passwords, and other compatible server-side software.
The dedicated server can be installed using the official server files distributed through Steam. For installation steps, SteamCMD commands, configuration, and required ports, follow our Sons of the Forest dedicated server setup guide.
Full administrator access allows you to install compatible third-party server software and modify server files. Mod availability and compatibility depend on the tools and game version you use, and may require additional manual configuration.
Your world and configuration files are stored on the server. If automated game-server backups are not included with your selected configuration, plan a separate backup routine for world saves and configuration files before making major changes or installing third-party modifications.
The standard dedicated server configuration uses UDP ports 8766, 9700, and 27016. Because you have administrator access, firewall rules and any custom port changes must be configured on the server as required.
